5 books you should read this spring

The Good Women of Safe Harbour by Bobbi French

I won this novel as a door prize at a neighbour’s birthday party and I couldn’t have been more thrilled (I never win anything!). I read the whole thing over a weekend, becoming completely enraptured by the small Newfoundland fishing town where the novel is set. This is a beautiful story of friendship and forgiveness and mortality, and what makes a meaningful life. (Just a tip, have a box of Kleenex nearby).

Inheritance by Dani Shapiro

I love everything Dani Shapiro writes, and this memoir was my absolute favourite of hers. She takes us on the heartbreaking and life-altering journey of finding out, at age fifty-four, that her father was not her biological father. She tells the story beautifully and honestly, and makes us think about our own family heritage and identity and what this means about who we are.

I Guess I Haven’t Learned That Yet by Shauna Niequist

I’ve read all of Shauna’s books and when this one arrived in the mail I think I actually did a happy dance right there in my living room. Her writing makes me feel like I’m curled up on the couch with a good friend, listening and sharing stories about the simple things that make life beautiful. This memoir tells of her and her family’s journey from the Chicago suburbs to New York City and all the ways this big move is changing them and teaching them.

Undistracted by Bob Goff

I’ve always enjoyed Bob Goff’s storytelling, and the crazy places and adventures he often finds himself in. I love that he sees life as one wild ride, not wanting to waste a single day (a true enneagram seven). His stories inspire me to live more wholeheartedly, and the importance of paying attention to the people in my life and the ways I can love them best.

Born A Crime by Trevor Noah

This is my book club’s read for the month and I can’t wait to make it all the way through. I’m already captivated by Trevor Noah’s story of growing up in South Africa during apartheid, as a blended child whose sheer existence was a crime. I look forward to reading his journey from a childhood of running and hiding to behind the desk of The Daily Show.
